Burrs Country Park

Please note that this report as with all others I post is my point of view and may/may not mirror the views of other members.

We arrived at Burrs late Friday afternoon and were immediately surprised by the amount of units already pitched on this small site. Picking our way amongst the trees to the left of the field, we managed to find a pitch and were soon set up.
The ground on this left side of the field is sloping, so much so that many were forced to put blocks under the legs of their units to obtain any kind of level. We ended up pitching across the gradient. The rest of the site is relatively flat and pegs (for those of you with canvas) went in fairly easily.

A few things noted whilst on this site are worth a mention;

1. From a disturbance point of view, the steam line that runs across the bridge at the end of the site may bother some people. Personally this did nothing to ruin our weekend, as the engines only run during daylight and do not start to early or run too late.

2. Sticking to the point of disturbance and also a possible security issue of this site, is the fact that the field is not exclusive. Whilst we were there, there was at least one unit and a couple of tents that were nothing to do with the rally and during the daylight hours any available spare space on the field seemed to be given over to people wishing to park their cars. Personally I found this openly intrusive as we found ourselves locking the car on site for the first time this year. A (perhaps) isolated incident occurred whereby there were teenagers knocking on unit doors asking for cigarettes and this did nothing to allay the fears of many.

3. Another point that I found disconcerting was the fact that the site had no Elsan point. Surely if this is a recognised camp site there should be some stipulation governing the disposal of waste rather than the toilets (which were on many occasions locked)?

4. Although there were showers on the site, only a few keys were supplied for the whole group. This rather begs the question, why bother with them at all if there are so few keys to hand?

My overall view of this site is that it is an outdoor pursuit centre trying to be a campsite. Dont get me wrong, it is a nice site to stop at but depending upon your issues regarding safety and security it may be unsuitable for your needs/wants. I would not (for instance) hold a D.A. Rally here as I think personally that the site is a little too small for such an event (the weekend that we were there saw several units banished to the car park/hard standing).

So in summing up, I would be forced top say that for reasons stated this is not on my favourites list of campsites. I would go again and be interested to see if the owners/managers of the site intend to make this a more dedicated camping area (by addressing security, accessibility and the Elsan issue) as this has the makings of a good weekend getaway.
