Gibralter Farm, Silverdale

Well with Easter now behind us and a few minutes to spare, I thought that I should give you a few words on Gibraltar Farm and our meet there this year.

I must admit that I go to sites with an open mind and (especially going to a site new to me) certain pensiveness. On the road to Gibraltar farm I could think of nothing else but a thousand variations of will the campers like it and was much relieved when we finally arrived.

The roads approaching the site are narrow so my first tip to anyone going there would be to study the maps carefully as turning the whole thing around is not an option! The track down to the site is interesting in that it goes through a series of turns, a concern perhaps if you own a long van, but our sixteen footer breezed down with ease. This said, I have to say it was worth it for the view. From the top of the track Morecambe Bay spreads out before you and looked quite stunning in the late afternoon sun, incidentally we managed some lovely sunset photos.

The field that we were given was sloping and many of us had to dig around for the chocks before we could get the kettle going. As the vans kept arriving, we were given another field which was a lot flatter on which to put them and in retrospect, we probably would have been better off there in the first place. This aside, we found the full time warden a very friendly chap, only too pleased to help anyone out, as was the landowner despite being somewhat overrun by lambs.

The site has male and female toilets and showers which we were able to use (often a novelty these days when rallying) and a gentle stroll through the woods brought you down to a rather rocky beach complete (so my sons insisted) with a pirates cave.

Now the down side and really it is only a little thing. The ground was very soft when we visited in March. A combination of an early Easter and the wonderful British wet winter left many of us bogged down in the mud. But fear not. The marvelous steward from the commercial side brought out a tractor and managed with ease to get us all off the grass and back onto terra firma.

All I can say to anyone thinking of visiting this site is it is worth it just for the view, which is simply stunning and changes every moment. The best time to visit may be more into the season proper (as we may do in future years), but having said that, whatever the weather you will not get abandoned.

There is a great shopping area in Carnforth with a large supermarket and Kendal is just around the corner by car, all in all a very good site. Why were you not there? Well I hope you will join us next time!

See you out there!

Pete
